Should I Work Out Every Day? A Definitive Answer to Your Complicated Question!
Some personal trainers might look at you in horror if you suggest working out daily. But the truth is that it’s absolutely fine! If you aren’t overdoing it, you’re free to exercise daily. But most people that workout daily have no clue how to structure their workouts! I do not recommend someone who is doing nothing set a goal of daily workouts starting tomorrow!
On the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with rest days either! Experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio and two strength sessions a week. But it’s up to you when you do them.
Is Working Out Every Day Too Much of a Good Thing?
A structured workout program often advises a day of rest every week. But if you desire to move your body every day, then do so! As long as you aren’t obsessing about daily workouts or pushing yourself too much, then you can never have too much exercise.
But, of course, everyone is different. So, your motivation behind wanting to work out daily is worth noting. If you find yourself veering off-track during a relaxation day, do a lighter or shorter session on what would’ve been a rest day.
The 5 Benefits of Working Out Every Day
Daily movement brings a ton of perks:
#1 Our Bodies Were Made to Move
The average adult spends around 70% of their time sitting. And yes, it’s causing major health problems for the masses.
Human bodies are made for movement. So, committing to some sort of exercise every single day helps combat the sedentary lifestyle many people lead. Plus, it helps build a habit more likely to stick long-term!
#2 Consistency Equals Reaching Goals
The phrase “consistency is key” couldn’t be truer when it comes to fitness goals. Whether you’re looking to lose fat, gain muscle, or improve endurance, staying consistent by working out daily can lead to greater results over time.
#3 Daily Mood Boosts
Exercise releases those oh-so-important happy hormones (endorphins), which elevate your mood by reducing stress and anxiety.
As more research is conducted on exercise and its mental health benefits, scientists are consistently recommending daily movement as a treatment for depression.
#4 You’ll Fuel Your Body Better
Working out is a conscious effort to be healthier. Therefore, you’re more likely to skip the chocolate bar and choose a more nutritional snack afterward.
Daily exercise is a tried-and-true way to help you practice moderation in the kitchen — and the bar! For example, you’re less likely to drink another glass of wine if you’ve planned a session at six the following morning.
#5 Clearer Minds, Healthier Bodies
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recognizes that exercise improves problem-solving and memory. Moving daily clears your mind, boosting productivity and so much more.
The 2 Potential Downsides of No Rest Days
Despite the unarguably amazing benefits of exercising daily, there are two large potential downsides to remember.
#1 Mental Burnout is Real
Doing too much too often can cause burnout. If you don’t switch up your daily workouts, you’ll quickly experience burnout and lack motivation. In other words, you won’t reap any of the daily exercise benefits!
#2 Insufficient Rest Can Harm Progress
Gains don’t happen until you recover. So, “daily exercise” doesn’t mean “daily HIIT exercise.”
Strength training breaks muscle tissue. Therefore, you don’t see the desired results until you give your muscles enough time to recover. Otherwise, you’re overtraining your body and undermining your workout’s effectiveness.
The Key to Healthily Working Out Every Day? Balance and Moderation
At the end of the day, it’s all about moderation and doing what makes your body feel good. Being strategic with your routine (i.e., varying intensity throughout the week) ensures you skip burnout and go straight to the daily workout benefits
