What is NEAT? Examples? 


NEAT stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis . This might sound complicated,but it means energy burned doing non exercise related activities. Think walking the dog, gardening, playing with your children, or washing the car. 

Why is NEAT important?

NEAT counts for a significant portion of the calories you burn every day. That hour in the gym is important, but the other 23 hours of the day count! Sedentary individuals have a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and some cancers. And this is regardless of weight.

How to increase NEAT?

Go for a Morning Walk- This is one the best ways to increase NEAT! I guess you can do it in the PM, but the chance of being lazy with a NETFLIX binge is much higher! Walking has approximately 900 million benefits, according to science. Just do it! 

Set a daily goal- Set small achievable goals and build on them over time. A goal for a number of steps per day is a great start! 

Get friends involved- You have a better chance of sticking with your new habit if you get friends involved. Extra accountability and a lot more fun!
