Recently I picked up a pair of golf clubs in an effort to learn a very complicated game. It makes me feel like the majority of the people who come to me for help. No idea where to start! 


Some of our top transformations have taught me a few lessons. I am going to share a few thoughts that will help those who feel overwhelmed and have no idea where to start.

Having a coach vs reading Books/Youtube/google –   

When it comes to this new venture, I am just like my potential clients. Watch a few videos from people who call themselves experts. I don’t know enough to know if they are or not.  Read some books. Google.  So far I have gone nowhere, but I am getting there fast! 

I plan to hire a coach. This has helped me reach my goals faster in every other area in my life. An investment up front that will save me a ton of time, money, and frustration. It actually ends up being cheaper over the long haul. 

Another benefit of a coach is being held accountable, having a time blocked out and place to go. Just like the people who say they plan to work out at home, but then nothing actually happens. Or they end up developing bad habits. 

It’s always great to have someone to answer questions that beginners think are silly. Hopefully golf coaching is similar to R.P.T where you don’t have to worry about getting judged. All levels are accepted. Plenty of no contract options without high pressure sales. 


The fundamentals 

The past two decades of teaching people how to exercise has taught me a few things. The main one is that the basics never go out of style. There will always be a few things that matter a lot more than others. Find out what they are and obsessively focus on building a strong foundation. Media hype makes this hard, because the basics don’t sell. 

Realistic goals 

My goal is to beat Tiger Woods within 3 months. Just kidding. Setting realistic goals is important for staying on track and staying motivated. A solid coach will be able to help with this. 

I will put you in your place if the goal is to lose 30 pounds in a month. The goal has to stretch you but needs to be realistic. Broken down into what has to be done today, this week, this month, and this year.
