Question: I’m struggling to get through my workouts. What should I do?

Answer: This is normal when you first start, or when you are getting back into  the swing of things after a layoff. It even happens to those with a lot more experience. Here are a few tips.

You need to challenge yourself, but pushing too hard might lead to burnout and injuries. Make sure you gradually build up over time. Hire a personal trainer to write a program that takes into consideration your goals and previous exercise history. 

Modify exercises  Having a hard time with a specific exercise? Find an exercise that works the same muscles, that YOU can perform safely . For example, replace push ups from the floor with standing push ups. Finding the right exercise will challenge you MORE than doing an exercise you are not ready for. 

Take breaks when needed/increase rest periods With first time members we encourage them to take breaks when needed. Over time we can reduce the amount of breaks and this is a form of progress. 

This also goes for days and weeks. Rest days are needed and will actually help those who have been consistent. 

Reduce the sets and reps – Maybe it’s one of those days where you have to reduce the sets and/or reps and just get through the workout. If this happens often, you probably have a poorly planned program. 

Change up the focus for the day – Maybe you are struggling with the weights and just need to get some extra cardio or flexibility in? Or maybe too much cardio is burning you out and you need to switch things up. 

 

Question: I’m too sore to workout! What should I do?

Answer: You can still workout, just change things up a  bit! I recommend having an active recovery day. Go for a walk, do some light cardio, or focus on flexibility and mobility. You might just need a longer warm-up to prepare for your workout.
