The Growth Mindset and Your Fitness Goals

Two people walked into our studio on January 1st. One was “successful”. And one is struggling right now.

What’s the difference?

You’d think one just didn’t try as hard, follow the program as well, or stick to their diet perfectly. But that’s simply not true.

Success Strategies

Here is the difference:

The “successful” one recognized two VERY important things:

  1. they set realistic expectations about what success looked like for them
  2. they adopted a growth mindset about getting there.

That’s it!

Why Growth Mindset?

Your success probably won’t look like what you see on TV or read on social media. It may not happen as quickly as you’d expect.

All success requires consistency.

According to Carol Dweck, author of the fantastic book Mindset, those with a “growth mindset” see challenges not as failures, but instead as evidence of growth and opportunity to improve.

These successful people are excited to come to the gym today and test their abilities, even if they’re not feeling it. They believe that the simple consistency of building habits and chipping away will pay dividends in the end. And they’re right.

On the other hand, those who struggle are always looking for excuses.

They’re “too tired” or “don’t have time” or “will start tomorrow”.

The reality is – regardless of the excuse, change is required for success.

How to Change

Life will always be busy. There’s always going to be that ONE food you can’t seem to give up. Tomorrow will always be a better day to start.

The truth about making a change? It requires actual change.

You can’t do the same thing over and over again and expect different results (this is lunacy).

The good news is – you can take ownership of your change.

You can start today by figuring out what diet and exercise adjustments work around your lifestyle. Get honest with yourself about your expectations and excuses.

Understand that the road to success is never linear. If you want to get the right side of success, you still have to travel it.
