4 Ways to Increase Motivation

Everyone has had at least one moment in life where they just didn’t feel motivated. Luckily, there are some simple strategies anyone can utilize to help them get motivated. From setting S.M.A.R.T. goals to using accountability through loved ones, you, too, can get your enthusiasm back.

Whether circumstances have brought you down or you lack the energy to push forward, here are 4 simple steps you can take today to move towards motivation.

 Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

When you set a large, new goal, it’s easy for your brain to become overwhelmed. This is especially true if you lack experience around that goal.

S.M.A.R.T. goals break down your large goal into smaller, simpler steps. These goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based.

Instead of saying, “I want to lose 50 pounds,” a replacement S.M.A.R.T. goal could be, “I want to lose a pound per week, throughout this year.” Having goals for the week, that you can break down into daily actions, works better.

Remember, your S.M.A.R.T. goal needs to be attainable, so be sure you believe it is doable within your daily schedule. Focus on developing habits and your daily actions.

Studies have shown that those who write down their goals are more successful in reaching them. It’s not enough to just think about your goals; you should also write them down and look at them daily.

Execute a Plan and Use Momentum

Too many people wait for motivation before doing what they need to do. The reality is that most of the time, motivation won’t just appear; you have to go out, put in the effort, and find it.

If you have created your S.M.A.R.T. goals, it’s time to put a plan into place to reach them. In the above example, you would break down the fat loss goal further by blocking out time for workouts, food prep, grocery shopping, and daily walks.

As you begin to tackle your plan, motivation will creep in. And it doesn’t stop there! The more goals you conquer, the more momentum you have. As you see yourself succeeding, even if they’re small successes at first, you begin to grow further in confidence and motivation.

Have an Accountability Partner

Humans are hardwired to want consistency. Studies have shown that those who pledged generosity before winning money were more likely to donate their winnings. While some may truly be generous, most people just want to remain consistent with how they describe themselves.

Use this to your advantage and describe what you’re trying to accomplish to someone you care about. Ask them to be your accountability partner. This means they will be checking in on your progress, which is a motivating factor to get you moving towards your goals. Of course, hiring a personal trainer will speed up your progress.

Surround Yourself with Positivity

Following the rule of averages, many say you are the average of your five closest friends. With that in mind, it’s important to make sure you surround yourself with positive people – especially if you are looking to increase your motivation and energy.

Positive people will encourage you to put effort towards your goals regardless of your feelings at the time. They can offer advice, compassion, and even humor to help lift your spirits.

If you hang out with them enough, you’ll become a more positive person yourself, and that, in itself, is motivating!
